An exceptional French Empire gilt-bronze four-light wall sconce, dating from the early 19th century. The central architectural backplate terminates in a fluted urn-form base, supporting a beautifully cast, spread-winged swan with an elegantly arched neck. Branching outward from the central column are four scrolling, foliate-cast arms, each terminating in stylized animal-head finials that hold detailed, leaf-fringed drip pans. The tall, columnar candle nozzles are fitted with contemporary brass sleeves and electrified candle-flame bulbs. The piece exhibits fine-quality chasing and a rich, authentic aged mercury-gilding patina typical of premier Parisian master bronziers of the period.
