PATINATED BRONZE BALUSTER-FORM DRAGON VASE, JAPAN, LATE MEIJI PERIOD
Patinated Bronze; 6.5 kg
Price on Request
A large cast Japanese patinated bronze vase of baluster form. The vessel is organized into distinct narrative registers, beginning with a flared neck depicting cranes in flight among drifting clouds. The central lobed section features elaborate archaistic phoenix panels. Most striking is the pedestal base, where a powerful, three-clawed dragon (ryu) is sculpted in nearly full-round relief, coiling vigorously through a sea of turbulent waves. The deep, rich chocolate patina emphasizes the dramatic interplay of shadow and light across the mythological motifs, characteristic of the fine Meiji metalwork.
