PAIR OF FIGURAL ROCOCO STYLE GILT BRONZE FIVE-LIGHT CANDELABRA, FRANCE, c.1870
PAIR OF FIGURAL ROCOCO STYLE GILT BRONZE FIVE-LIGHT CANDELABRA, FRANCE, c.1870
Gilt bronze (ormolu) and noir belge marble;
An fine pair of five-light candelabra, each meticulously cast in the exuberant Louis XV Rococo revival taste. The central fluted standard is surmounted by four scrolling foliate arms and a central upright light, all terminating in acanthus-chased nozzles and beaded drip pans. Each candelabrum is supported by a finely modeled ormolu putto, perched atop a fluted black marble columnar plinth. The composition is raised on a shaped marble base, further embellished with gilt-bronze foliate mounts and scrolled feet. The contrast between the lustrous fire-gilding and the deep, polished marble reflects the high-quality craftsmanship characteristic of leading mid-19th-century Parisian foundries.
