NEPTUNE AND TRITON GILT BRONZE NINE-LIGHT CANDELABRA, FRANCE, c.1870
NEPTUNE AND TRITON GILT BRONZE NINE-LIGHT CANDELABRA, FRANCE, c.1870
Gilt and patinated bronze (ormolu);
This imposing nine-light candelabra is an exceptional example of the Second Empire’s technical virtuosity, standing at an impressive 3 feet.
The central sculptural group features a patinated bronze figure of Neptune accompanied by a Triton blowing a conch shell, set amidst a surge of gilt-bronze sea foam and rocaille. From this maritime base emerges a dynamic explosion of nine foliate-scroll branches, each meticulously chased with acanthus leaves and terminating in fluted nozzles. The marriage of deep patination and brilliant mercury gilding emphasizes the sculptural drama, reflecting the 19th-century French passion for monumental, mythologically inspired décor.
Note: The piece has been electrified, with wiring cleverly integrated into the foliate arms to preserve the original silhouette.
