A William IV sterling silver salver of circular form, masterfully executed by the Edinburgh silversmiths McHattie & Fenwick in 1831. The piece features a high-relief border heavily ornamented with scrolling acanthus leaves, floral clusters, and shell motifs in the Rococo Revival taste. The mirrored "well" is intricately flat-chased with a broad band of foliate sprays and diaper-work, centering a noble armorial crest underscored by the Latin motto PROBITATE—signifying honesty and integrity. This heavy-gauge specimen represents the pinnacle of Scottish silversmithing during the early nineteenth century, retaining hallmarks and good surface definition.
