EDWARDIAN PIERCED STERLING SILVER CENTERPIECE, SHEFFIELD, 1911
Sterling Silver; 842 g
An exquisite Edwardian sterling silver centerpiece of towering trumpet form, expertly crafted by the renowned Sheffield firm Martin, Hall & Co. in 1911. The central flaring epergne is flanked by three gracefully scrolling branches, each supporting a detachable circular sweetmeat basket. Both the primary rim and the secondary baskets feature intricate pierced foliate fretwork and scrolling shell borders, a testament to the delicate neo-classical revival tastes of the era. The ensemble is anchored by a weighted, high-domed base boasting matching openwork ornamentation, presenting a sophisticated silhouette for a formal banquet service.
This particular example is of significant commemorative interest, bearing a presentation inscription on the base for a Silver Wedding anniversary (1887–1912). The engraving identifies the gift as being from "G & GWH" to recipients "MHK" and "JK," providing a rare and intimate provenance linked to a 25-year marital milestone celebrated in 1912.
