AN EXQUISITE ENAMEL AND GILT SATSUMA VASE DEPICTING KANNON, JAPAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY

Of robust baluster form, the earthenware body is densely decorated in raised polychrome enamels and rich gilding. The continuous narrative scene depicts the Goddess Kannon standing serenely amidst a lively congregation of Rakan (Arhats), each rendered with highly expressive, individualized features and adorned in sumptuously patterned, brocade-like robes. A fierce, white-scaled dragon writhes through the lower register among stylized crashing waves, adding dynamic movement to the overall composition. The neck and foot are strictly bordered with complex geometric and floral lappet bands. 

Note on Goddess Kannon:

Kannon is the Japanese name for Guanyin, the revered Buddhist Bodhisattva of Compassion. Venerated as a source of infinite mercy, salvation, and spiritual healing, Kannon is traditionally depicted with serene grace - frequently holding a lotus blossom or sacred gem - and is a central protective figure in Mahayana Buddhist iconography.
