This fine Satsuma oviform vase is elaborately decorated in rich polychrome enamels and extensive gilding. The continuous scene depicts a gathering of rakan (Buddhist arhats) with raised, gilded halos, alongside the goddess Kannon and a coiling, scaled dragon against a finely crackled cream ground. The figures are rendered with highly detailed, patterned robes in traditional Satsuma style, demonstrating masterful brushwork. The base bears the iron-red and gilt crest of the Shimazu clan above a rectangular seal reading Dai Nippon, Satsuma yaki, Ariyama zo (Great Japan, Satsuma ware, Made by Ariyama).
