A baluster vase of Satsuma type raised on its original pierced cylindrical stand. It is richly worked in raised enamels and gilding over a crackled ground. Shaped reserves on either side show a robed sage with an attendant boy holding a scroll, set in a garden landscape. The neck carries gilt dragon-scroll handles and applied butterflies, with applied ring motifs on the shoulders. The stand is modelled with coiled beasts and chrysanthemum roundels and pierced with arched apertures. It is a bold, highly decorative example of the Japanese export ceramics made for Western markets in the early twentieth century.
