An exceptional pair of monumental Satsuma baluster vases, exemplifying the technical virtuosity of the late Meiji period. The earthenware bodies are meticulously decorated with continuous narrative friezes depicting a gathering of Arhats (Rakan) and legendary Immortals. The figures exhibit extraordinary characterization, rendered with fine-line facial details and heavily gilded, brocaded robes. Notable for the sophisticated application of moriage (raised enamel), the vases feature tactile, "jeweled" textures on the halos and garments. This intricate ornamentation is set against a ground of dense geometric patterns and floral reserves, culminating in a regal, light-catching aesthetic.
