A PAIR OF GILT-SILVER AND ENAMEL MODELS OF FALCONS, JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD
Enamel on Silver; 2091 g
This exceptional pair of silver and polychrome enamel okimono is a quintessential example of the 'Golden Age' of Meiji metalwork, each falcon naturalistically rendered with an alert, predatory poise. Fine hairline engraving defines the plumage, transitioning into sophisticated polychrome enamel work on the wings, each accented by a circular cabochon medallion inset. The birds are perched upon rugged high-relief rockwork bases finished in variegated translucent green and deep blue enamels simulating moss and weathered stone, mounted on ebonized wooden bases. The anatomical precision, from the slightly parted beaks to the piercing inset eyes, reflects the transition of traditional metalworking skills into high-art decorative objects produced for the international export market.
