This exquisite pair of hexagonal baluster vases exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Meiji-era Satsuma ware. Each vessel is finely painted in polychrome enamels and lavish gilding, displaying continuous, intricate figural narratives. One face depicts a serene gathering of scholars and sages examining scrolls within a bamboo grove, while the reverse portrays elegant ladies and children strolling through a vibrant landscape featuring pavilions and Mount Fuji in the distance. The scenes are framed by meticulously detailed geometric borders at the neck and flared foot. The undersides bear the Shimazu family crest above a gilt rectangular cartouche reading 'Satsuma'.
