Standing at an imposing 33 inches, this monumental Satsuma vase features a rather rare, continuous, and dynamic tableau of Japanese macaques and sparrows amidst gnarled pine branches and vibrant blooming peonies. The meticulously executed polychrome enamels and rich gilding are set against a characteristic creamy, finely crackled earthenware ground. Framed by intricate geometric and brocade borders at the flared neck and pedestal foot, the composition reflects the sophisticated technical mastery of the Meiji period. This impressive vessel exemplifies the elaborate opulence highly sought after in late 19th-century Japanese export ceramics.
Condition: Exhibiting wear to the neck with associated loss of gilding and evidence of historic repair work; minor surface scratches present on the body.
