Of shaped-circular form with a moulded Chippendale-style border of incurved scrolls, raised on three hoof supports. The field is later engraved with Rococo-revival scrolls, trellis panels and flowerheads surrounding a central cartouche inscribed as a presentation from the parishioners of Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, to their clergyman, the Revd John Morton, dated October 1872.

Catalogue Note: Robert Abercromby was among the foremost salver specialists of early Georgian London, and his work in this form is well represented in public and private collections. The salver is characteristic of his output in the 1730s, while its later decoration records a second life as a Victorian presentation piece. Early Georgian salvers were frequently chosen for such testimonials, their age lending weight to the gift. Here the engraving preserves the name of the recipient, the parish and the occasion.

Marks: Fully hallmarked below the base, London, 1737. The maker's mark is double-struck.

Condition: Good. The engraving is crisp, with light scratches to the underside consistent with age and use.

Diameter: 26.5 cm (10½ in)
